Alternative for video – mplayer frontends
If you used Linux before N900 you may know that there is simple command-line player called mplayer. It’s quite easy to use with one of many available frontends and plays many different file types. Let’s see what can we get on N900.
First frontend for Maemo5 is SiB, pretty simple yet functional. At start it indexes all of video files available on device making full list. Every file on this list may be played or resumed from last position, which is very useful when watchin long videos only in moments of spare time. It opens mplayer when file is selected, so every keyboard shortcut available in mplayer is available here.
- SiB user interface
- kmplayer file open dialog
- kmplayer main screen
- kmplayer backend selection
Second frontend you can use is kmplayer, a little more complex. Here you can find option to create or open playlists in few available formats (m3u, xml), add files to favourites or see history of recently played videos. Configuration seems to be more detailed, here you can choose backend that will actually play your clips, so you can choose depending on performance or just personal opinion or sympathy for osso-media-server or mplayer ![]()
I find mplayer really nice piece of software for every Linux system, it doesn’t matter if it’s desktop, notebook or mobile phone, nevertheless it’s nice to have some graphical UI which can use 3 clicks instead of typing full path to file in command line.
