Nokia N900 coming to US retailers on September 27, 2009

Hold your breath for September 27th.The Nokia Blog mentions that Nokia has given one of its major distributors in the United States the estimated date for the Nokia N900.
Retailers receive their stock a couple of days after distributors ship them over.
The suggested retail price is $649 USD just as expected. Want to pre book your Nokia N900? (in the USA) click here.
It would be interesting to know whether people would prefer to prebook the device or compare it side by side with the Nokia N97 and Nokia N97 mini before actually purchasing the device.
For those who are not too happy with the symbian S60 v5 interface, Maemo 5 may provide a fresh breath of air.
Though the USD 50-USD 60 may prove to bend the sales in the favour of the 32GB N97. I personally in a way regret buying the N97 since the Maemo platform looks very promising and so does the new fast ARM processor thats present in the Nokia N900.
For those of you who need to replace your old phone, the N900 is the way to go if you’re ready to spend that kind of money. For the current lot of N97 owners, I would suggest you to take a demo of the N900 and only then think of changing your device. With the rising popularity of Maemo 5, who knows, Nokia might just release a firmware for the N97 which would replace Symbian S60 v5 with Maemo 5, for the Nokia N97. Now thats wishful thinking for the Nokia N97 user who aspires to own the N900 but does not want to spend that kind of money again on a similar (read sibling) device.

Irreco on the Nokia N900

Irreco is an application that allows you to use your Nokia Tablet PC (in this case the Nokia N900) as a remote control with the built in Infrared.
You can see the link to the official Irreco site here.
With Irreco and the presence of an IR port on your mobile device you can control Infrared compatible devices like televisions, DVD players and Air Conditioners. Irreco also has a remote editor which you can use to place buttons to the screen and customize the remote in your own way.
Irreco certainly will not change the way we live our life but having a universal remote in your mobile phone is definitely a feature to boast about. Not too long ago, Psiloc had developed a similar software for Nokia S60 v1,v2,v3 devices which was somewhat successful with the aficionados but later lost its way through since many top end Nokia devices did not have the Infrared port, which is necessary for the mobile device to function as a remote.
Nokia tablet PC’s have had a lot of success as tablet PC’s but have never really been a mass market product for Nokia, this could change with the Nokia N900, simply because not only is it going to be Nokias top end cellphone but also a full-fledged tablet PC.
With the success of the N900, the usage of Irreco is bound to be appreciated, we shall wait to see the impact Irreco has on the N900 users, depending on that, nokia might just favour a version of Irreco for the Symbian users as well. Besides, we might see the IR port coming back to Nokia devices on mass market level again. Will the IR port ever be back on all nokia devices?
That remains to be seen, until the N900 is launched and Irreco is judged.

Buy the Nokia N97? or wait for the N900.. read on!

Just a few months after the launch of the high end Nokia N97, Nokia have now announced the Nokia N900. Replacing the N810 Internet Tablet, the N900 is a beast for the fact that it is more of a smartphone than an Internet Tablet – you can even make phone calls on it!
This positions it on top of the smartphone market, where it competes directly with the Nokia N97, Sony Xperia and the HTC Touch Pro 2! So what is it that the N900 can do that the N97 can not do? And besides should you go ahead and buy the Nokia N97 or wait for the N900 to lauch?
The dimensions of the Nokia N900 are 4.4″ x 2.3″ x 0.7″, which is big for a phone, but only as big as an HTC TouchPro 2. And when you think that the N900 is being pitched as an Internet Tablet, it’s actually kind of small.
One thing that isn’t in doubt is the N900’s looks. It’s black, it’s big, it’s a touchscreen smartphone, but with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard that looks more like the E90’s than than the N97’s. Better still, with an 800 x 480 screen, it looks like it really means business.
The extensive list of features includes:
• 32GB of internal storage
• 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics
• Dual-LED Flash
• 800 x 480 video recording
• A-GPS with Ovi Maps
• 10Mbps download, 2Mbps upload HSDPA for super-fast browsing
• Quad-band GSM
• 54Mbps data transfer over Wi-Fi
• 600MHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor
• 1GB application memory
• OpenGLES 2.0 3D graphics acceleration
• Superb Web browser with built-in support for Adobe Flash 9.4
• Maemo 5 operating system
• TV-Out
• Media player supporting the following formats and codecs: mp4, .avi, .wmv, .3gp, H.264, MPEG-4, Xvid, WMV, H.263
• Music formats supported include .wav, .mp3, .AAC, .eAAC, .wma, .m4a
• FM Radio
That’s a huge list of features. But look a little closer, and you’ll see it’s not that different to the N97. So how do the two differ, and which one should you buy?
Where the two differ significantly, is the operating systems underpinning each phone, and the vision that Nokia has for them.
The Nokia N97 uses the old Symbian operating system that Nokia have been using on …
