Mobile market is growing quite fast lately, manufacturers compete to win their share by releasing high-end technology with good operating system on board. Sony Ericsson dropped behind for some time, but haven’t said the last word yet, still being big player wit it’s recent Xperia X10.
Let’s see how does it look compared to N900. X10 runs under control of Google Android 1.6 (not 2.1 as some expected), hardware looks pretty reasonable as for todays smartphone, with 480×854 4-inch touchscreen, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 384MB RAM and 8.1Mpix camera. You can say ‘wow, better than N900‘. Maybe you’re right, mind the fact that hardware is newer. One thing that really suprised me in X10 is only 1GB of internal memory with possibility to use microSD card, while N900 offers built-in 32GB of memory! I realize it’s also used by system and applications space but it’s like 30 times more than X10. In case of connectivity both devices offer almost the same, 2G/3G GSM and HSDPA/HSUPA data connections, Bluetooth with A2DP sound profiles or WiFi. If you’re interested in more details, see the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 review on PhoneReport.
And again, this is my personal opinion as N900 user, software developer and Linux fan that Nokia looks better from my point of view. Mainly because hardware differences are rather minor, sometimes giving advance to N900, Android is still pretty tightly held by Google, while Maemo is much more open and gives much more freedom.

Some time ago you may have seen articles about upcoming Apple product known as iPhone 4G, which leaked by accident and was described in most of gadget blogs. But what can we expect from this new Apple’s gadget?
First of all we can’t say much about software since prototype was remotely disabled soon after it was lost. Nevertheless the blogger who intercepted this prototype, from Gizmodo blog, decided to dismantle it and check what is inside. Comparing it to N900 it most probably has better screen resolution (which is understandable since it’s newer), front camera for video chats (which N900 already has), plastic instead of metal cover to improve wireless reception (most of N900 cover is like this and I have good opinion on wireless reception). This model of iPhone has additional volume button so with main button it makes… few, N900 has full keyboard, volume keys, power button, camera key and lock key and I use them every day. And more of that iPhone is Apple product which doesn’t give developers much choice of programming languages and environments. N900 and Maemo gives full variety of possibilities available for Linux in general.
If you’re interested have a look at the iPhone 4G article at PhoneReport.
My choice is obvious, if I every decide to change my phone to anything else it will be… another Nokia N900. Apple’s iPhone is not meant for me, but surely has some interesting features for some people.

New technologies and platforms on mobile market is something normal nowdays, and some of this inventions use Linux as a base. Maemo 5 and the newest Android 2.1 are both based on Linux in a slightly different way.
In case of Maemo users get almost the same system as on desktop, with typical kernel and most of tools and utilities or at least their substitutes. This allows writing applications in similar way as for desktop, using C, C++, python etc. Android was in fact modified in almost every single detail, beginning from kernel to the desktop and applications, which for android are writen in language similar to Java with API and libraries specific only to this platform.
Maemo 5 is recently waiting for PR1.2 update, described by me already. What comes to Android 2.0/2.1 codenamed Eclair? Among changes we can find Microsoft Exchage support or live wallpapers (what Maemo 5 already has available by installed applications) and many other UI changes what happens on every platform from time to time. Moreover from the very beginning Android is pretty tightly attached to google services, so you get full set of synchronization tools out of the box, what comes to N900 with a bit more configuration. One big advantage of Google’s system is the fact it’s already available on number of phones, while Maemo 5 resides only on N900 and it’s earlier versions only on internet tablets from nokia.
So what’s better? From my point of view N900 and Maemo with it’s flexibility and nice progress in application development. Android is more closed and restricted, which is not my favourite.
An upgrade to Android is actually coming, which we will compare when it’s out. If you’re interested, head over to PhoneReport to read about Android 2.5.

Although I just compared the Nokia N900 with the iPhone OS 4, I have to write outside my schedule about the new Nokia C6 unveil from today. The first impression to me was that Nokia brings a really nice looking professional smartphone to the market. You can discover a little similarity to the N97, only the keyboard is slided out like at the N900. It runs on Symbian S600 5th edition, got an 3.2 inch HD touchscreen, a four row keyboard and a five megapixel camera. These specks seems to be almost same as from the N97, but the functionality and the fabrication looks way better.
The functions are also pretty much like in the N97 and N97 mini, but the price seems to be a real killer. Only eur 220,00 before taxes and subsidies are estimated, and thats not even the half of our phones price. And it has the free Nokia Turn by Turn Ovi Maps navigation too right from the box. It brings the best messaging together with instant access to your favourite contacts and communications as we are used from our N900´s. The phone itself is expected in the second quarter of 2010 and I can´t wait to see it for real.
I think this will be a really hot device! Take a closer look at: Nokia C3, C5 and E5. What do you think about it?

Although the iPhone OS 4 itself is not on the market yet (its release is predicted to the second half of 2010), its upcoming features can be already compared to the N900.
Steve Jobs introduced numerous improvements for the new version of the iPhone in the Apple headquarters in Cupertino on the 8th of April. But hold on: Most of them sounds very familiar to us N900 users.
The first of these new characteristics is quess what: Yes, Multitasking! Doesn´t we have this already on our N900s? And hasn´t Nokia always been one step ahead when it comes to multitasking on mobile devices? Well, I think so! Steve showed about 12 applications running at the same time. How much do you have tested running on the N900?
Skype is coming as an native app also. Another feature what is still build in from the beginning in our phones.
Background location. WOW, what does this mean? The iPhone is able to get GPS data, while listening to music or watching to a video … from where does this come from? Because of Nokias accomplishment since the old Symbian versions, maybe?
One of the new quintessence is the possibility to create folders on the iPhone. Is this something new and mind-blowing? Yes, for iPhone users of course. The Apple phone is slowly approximating a handheld computer status like the N900 was right from the start.
Another novelty presented from Apple is the Mail Box administration. Do I really have to write more about this? Conversations will be stored in so called Threads. Wondering about the similarity to the chat-like message function on our N900.
And at last really something new: iAd. The name alone should tell you all. Advertising on the phone. Yes, that´s what I really want to have, don´t you?
Don´t misunderstand me: I like the iPhone. It´s a very stylish designed smartphone just for the right audience. Amazingly with this new features it will more and more be competitive with devices like ours. Where Apple wants to go with its iPhone?

Since I read somewhere in the Maemo community, that Nokia Map Loader is now available for our beloved N900, I tried and tried to find the way to install it and use it. It’s not easy to find the download for the Map Loader on the Nokia site, sorry, for me it wasn’t. Finally I found it here, thanks to the german blogsite www.pocket.at, but you can find it also on the national Nokia site, if you willing enough to.
You will find also two versions, one for the PC and one for the Mac. I downloaded first the Windows version to give it a try on my XP machine (I thought to take the secure way, on installing it to the PC). First you have to know, that you need to install the PC suite, unless you didn’t have it already. Then install the Map Loader, and restart your computer. Don’t ask why, the instructions told me so, it won’t work without a restart. Full of expectation I started the program. It told me that I am connected to minimum one phone N900 (PC suite mode) and that it couldn’t find the map location and that I have to connect again in Mass Storage Mode. After this procedure it just starts to wait for my phone, although it is connected (online in the PC suite). Nothing happend. Very confused.
?
?
?
After this defeat, I took my macbook and downloaded Map Loader again, this time for the Mac , started it and nothing. Also here you have to install first the Nokia Multimedia Transfer program for the mac to success to run the Map Loader. And what a pleasant surprise: it worked! I downloaded maps to my N900! Now I have to test it on the road, and for I am on a road trip right now, this is the opportunity. But this is another story.

Recently it has hit the markets the new Google phone which it has been talking about it since long before it’s released. After quite some time, the Google Phone Nexus One was released on January 5th 2010. As it is a direct competitor of the Nokia N900, we decided to make a comparison between this two.
As my others comparisons were, I’m going to follow the same rules. I’m not going to talk about each specification of these phones, only the differences and the important ones in my opinion.
Dimensions & Weigh – Both presents pretty much the same dimensions with the slightly difference of the deepness as the Nokia N900 presents a physic QWERTY keyboard. However, the N900 is almost 1cm less tall than the Nexus one. The Nexus One dimensions are 119 x 59.8 x 11.5 mm while the N900’s one are 110.9 x 59.8 x 18 mm leading to an important difference if you plan to carry the phone on your pocket and be extreme comfortable with it. Again a little weight difference its expected due to the keyboard, as the N900 weighs 181g and the Nexus One 130g
Display – Both presents the 800×480 pixels resolution. However, the Nokia N900 does it on a 3.5” inches TFT resistive touch screen display while the Nexus One on a 3.7” inches AMOLED capacitive touch screen display. The Nexus One particularity is that it comes with Trackball navigation. Proximity sensor for auto turn-off and Accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate are included in both devices.
Memory – As in other comparisons, the N900 presents the one of the best storage capacities on the market as it has a 32 GB internal storage capable of 48 GB with a 16 GB microSD and 256 MB RAM. While the Nexus One has only 512 MB RAM, 512 MB ROM and It’s capable of storage up o 32 GB with a microSD although a 4 GB microSD is included.
Network & Data – Almost no differences between these two devices, as both comes with GPRS Class 32, HSUPA- 2Mbps, WLAN Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP and microUSB …

Continuing with the Nokia N900 comparisons, today it’s against a family member, the Nokia E72. However it’s a business device, it presents pretty much the same characteristic as the Nokia N900 with slightly differences like full QWERTY keyboard although the N900 ones’ is slide-out. As usual I’m not going to talk about every spec from both phones, what I would do is to point out the differences and the some other important thins related to them.
Display & Dimension – As being a touch phone, the N900 screen it’s bigger and better as it’s 3.5 inch with 800×480 pixels resolution while the E72 is 2.36 inch with 320×240 pixels resolutions. Both are TFT 16M colors. Their sizes it’s almost the same as the E72 measures are 114 x 58 x 10 mm, 65 cc and the N900 measures are 110.9 x 59.8 x 18 mm, 113 cc although the N900 weights a just a little more (181 g against the 128g of the E72).
Memory – As the E72 is consider a business phone this is its’ weak point, coming along with only 250 MB internal memory capable of up to 16GB with a microSD card as the N900 has 32 GB internal memory capable of up to 48 GB with a 16GB microSD card.
Data & Connectivity – Both come along with Wi-Fi, 3G, GPRS and EDGE capabilities: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g (the E72 adds Nokia VoIP 3.0), 3G – HSDPA, 10.2 Mbps; HSUPA 2 Mbps, EDGE – Class 32, 296 kbps and GPRS – Class 32, 100 kbps. As the E72 lacks of infrared port, its’ Bluetooth version is 2.0 with A2PD while the N900 Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP.
Camera – The E72 camera has been updated from a 3.2 MP (Nokia E71) to a 5 MP camera, 2592 x 1944 pixels, autofocus, and LED flash capable of a video recording VGA@15fps. There is a slightly difference because the N900 camera resolutions is 2576×1936 pixels, Carl Zeiss optics, DUAL Led flash and video light as it records video on a WVGA resolution (848 x 480)@25fps. The differences are minimal.
Hardware & OS & Features – …

As the Nokia N900 has been released, I thought that it was a good idea to compare it against the possible competitors. The Sony Ericsson Satio is one of those and although it has similar features, there are important differences on some of them. As usual I’m not going to talk about every spec from both phones, what I would do is to point out the differences and the some other important thins related to them.
Dimensions & Display – The sizes are pretty similar although the N900 is a little bit bigger probable because of the QWERTY keyboard as well as being the heaviest. However, there is an important difference in the touch screen as the Satio screen is 360×640 pixels and the N900 is 800×400 pixels. Both screens are 16M colors and 3.5 inch.
Memory – Despite of being a top of the range phone, the Satio only has 128MB internal memory with the possibility of taking it up to 32 GB with a microSD card. Instead, the N900 has 32GB internal memory with the possibility of taking it up to 48 GB with a 16 microSD card.
Data & Connectivity– Both have Wi-Fi as well as 3G, GPRS and EDGE although the Satio GPRS and EDGE is Class 10 and the N900 is Class 32. While the 3G connectivity on the N900 is HSDPA, 10Mbps; HSUPA, 2Mbps and the Satio is HSDPA, 7.2 Mbps; HSUPA, 3.6 Mbps. Both have Bluetooth with a little difference that the Satio has v2.0 with A2DP and the N900 v2.1 with A2DP too. The last important difference is the lack of an infrared port on the Satio.
Camera – The Satio strength point of the Satio, introducing the most powerful camera on the mobile phones market with 12.1 MP resolution, 4000 x 3000 pixels, autofocus, xenon flash, video LED flash as well as Touch focus, geo-tagging, face and smile detection. Where the N900 has a 5MP, 2576×1936 pixels, Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus, Dual LED flash, video light as well as geo-tagging. However on the video category, the N900 is better as it records a WVGA …

Here is a new comparison, today our Nokia N900 against one of its own family, Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition (already in US stores) . Before I start making the comparison I want to clarify that this comparison also works for the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music due to being the exact same features (hardware and software) with the added of an Lifetime pedestrian and vehicle voice-guided navigation licenses (only useful on the region where the phone was bought) and coming along with car kit which includes a charger and a support. Finally I want to add as usual that I’m not going to talk about every spec from both phones, what I would do is to point out the differences and the some other important thins related to them.
Sizes: The Nokia 5800 dimension are 111×51.7×15.5mm (83cc) and weights 109g. While the N900 dimensions are 110.9×59.8x18m (113cc) and weights 181g showing the little difference on their sizes but an important one on the weight if this is an aspect that can bother you on a mobile phone.
Display: Both comes with a TFT resistive touch screen 16M colors, but the Nokia 5800 resolutions is 360×640 pixels on a 3.2 inches surface while the N900 resolution is 800×480 pixels on a 3.5 inches surface, a better improvement. In addition, both include Proximity sensor for auto turn-off and Accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate presenting a difference on the text entry. The 5800 has handwriting recognition (or touch screen keyboard) while The N900 has a full QWERTY physical Keyboard.
Memory: The N900 makes the difference with its 32GB storage, 256 MB RAM and the possibility of taking it up to 48 GB with a 16GB microSD. On the 5800 the internal memory is 81 MB and 128 MB RAM, and a microSD card slot up to 16 GB.
Data: Not big difference in general but important details on connectivity. GPRS and EDGE Class 32 is common on both, but the N900 presents a USB v2.1 against a v2.0 on the 5800 both with A2DP. On connectivity, The 5800 has HSDPA 3.6 Mbps 3G network and WLAN Wi-Fi 802.11b/g with …

Our everyday life is full of Internet interaction and when I read about the Nokia N900 browser being the best on the market I thought it was something I must share with you all.
The guys at FoneArena decided to compare the web browser of the Nokia N900, the iPhone, Samsung OmniaHD, a Blackberry and an Android device. In my opinion, it’s a representative and competitive Smartphone’s group. The conclusion? They concluded this: “No Other phone can come close to N900 in the Browsing Department”. It’s a very shocking sentence due to the idea that the Nokia N900 it’s far more ahead of the others, but they said that they are not kidding. Basically they load the same pages on every phone, and only the Nokia N900 got closer to load them the same way it does on a desktop computer. Even the bank and airlines web sites which are the most problematic.
The results could be related to the fact that the Nokia N900 comes from a family of Internet Table (N800 and N810). Don’t forget that the Nokia N900 could be defined as an Internet Tablet with Phone features. So, If you are all the time navigating on the Internet and you like to experience the same as in a desktop computer, the Nokia N900 is your choice.

Finally here is a video where the guys of FoneArena test the connection speed.

I have been asked to do a new comparison between our Nokia N900 and the new Motorola Droid phone which Google is showing the power of their OS, Android. As usual I’m not going to talk about every spec from both phones, what I would do is to point out the differences and the some other important thins related to them.
First of all we got to highlight the OS. On the Nokia N900 we have the Maemo 5 which is a new OS that it’s really promising and most of the developers are getting familiar with but most of them have expressed their happiness and conform about it. On the Motorola Droid phone we got Android 2.0 OS which is in the same situation that the Maemo 5 OS, is basically a new OS, Open source and it’s promising too. If you want to know which one is the best, you would have to wait some time (like a year) to see how the people respond about them. Probably the developer community already has a winner.
Memory – On this category the Nokia N900 leads with the 32gb internal memory plus the possibility of taking it up to 48gb with a 16gb microSD card while the Motorola Droid comes with a 256mb internal memory and the possibility of adding a 32gb microSD card.
Display & Dimensions – There is a little difference on the Display where the Nokia N900 has a 3.5” display, the Motorola Droid has a 3.7” display, not too much. And the Nokia N900 dimensions are 110.9 x 59.8 x 18mm where on the Motorola Droid are 115,8 x 60 x 13,7mm, again not too much.
Then we got basically the same features such as 5 mp camera (on the Nokia N900 you have the plus that it is a Carl Zeiss), Music and Video Player with wide range of formats, GPS, SMS, Email, Bluetooth and Wi Fi summarizing.
A big difference for some unknown time is the web browsing. The Nokia N900 comes with Full internet meaning the capability of opening any web page due to the Flash Player 9.4 …

Nokia and BlackBerry are very respectable companies, so I decided to compare their most powerful touch devices like the Nokia N900 and the BlackBerry Storm 9530.
Display. We have already talked a lot about the Nokia N900 Display (480×800 pixels and a 3,6” sizes). While the BlackBerry Storm 9530 Display is 3,25” and 480×360 (Just a little less than the Nokia N900).
About the Touch screen I would like to highlight that the BlackBerry Storm 9530 comes with a fantastic feedback! Something that I consider that we are losing with the touch screen devices. What is this? When you are “touching” the button showed on the screen your finger doesn’t actually knows exactly if you have touched it (feedback). So on the Blackberry Storm 9530, you can touch the buttons on the screens, but to click it you have to press the screen which actually moves.
Not losing the habit, Nokia N900 5MP Camera with Dual-Led Flash and Autofocus sweeps the 3.2MP Camera with auto flash, autofocus and 2x digital zoom of the BlackBerry Storm 9530.
Although we don’t know about the Nokia N900’s battery life, it’s important to say that the BlackBerry Storm 9530´s battery life is 15 hs on standby and 6h of talk time, very impressive!
The BlackBerry Storm 9530 comes with a full HTML internet browser but nothing compares with the Full internet capability of the Nokia N900 (HTML, xHTML, WAP 2.0 and Flash Player 9.4).
Where the BlackBerry Storm 9530 becomes strong is on the email subject. When reading BlackBerry, you aren’t reading just a brand-name, you are being guaranteed about having one of the best and more secure email services. While on the Nokia N900 we don’t know too much about it. My guess here is that Nokia would keep betting on the Nokia Email Exchange.
Both phones come with AGPS, Bluetooth, Media Player (capable of playing lots of different formats), microSD slot, etc. The only big difference here is the QWERTY Keyboard. The Nokia N900 has one while on the BlackBerry Storm 9530 you only have the one on the screen. An interesting thing about this is that this …

Today I’m posting a comparison between the Nokia N900 and the HTC Touch Pro 2. Aesthetically both phones look the same, Touch Screen and QWERTY keyboard, this was the reason for me to write about them in order to point out their differences.
As my other comparison was, I’m going to follow the same rules. I’m not going to talk about each specification of these phones, only the differences and the important ones in my opinion.
First we got the processor. The HTC Touch Pro comes with a Qualcomm 528 MHz that it’s not bad at all, but the Nokia N900 flashlight this with the ARM Cortex A8 600Mhz.
The OS. Nokia N900 presents the Maemo 5, a new OS for mobile phones (open source) that it’s very promising and there is an increasing expectation around it. On the other device, the HTC Touch Pro 2 we found the Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. A very well known OS.
The Camera on the Nokia N900 is a 5MP one, against a 3.2MP Camera on the HTC Touch Pro 2.
Dimension & Weight. The Nokia N900 sizes are 110,9 x 59,8 x 18 (19,55) mm while on the HTC Touch Pro 2 are 116 X 59.2 X 17.25 mm (just a little more “tall” 5mm). Their weight it’s pretty much the same, a 181g on the Nokia N900 and 175g on the HTC Touch Pro.
There is a big difference on the QWERTY Key board. The Nokia N900 has the one we are used to that would be 3 lines while the HTC Touch Pro 2 presents a 5 lines keyboard, interesting!(Check the images below to see this)
What it’s new on the HTC Touch Pro 2 is technology called StraightTalk, for linking the various platforms of communication that this device has (never been so easy to go from an email to a call or a message). Also comes with a second microphone in order to leave the HTC Touch Pro 2 on a table face down and automatically switch to hands free operation. This really helps when being on a call-conference (For more information about these new …

Last but not less important, here is the comparison on the Features aspect between this two.
The first impression is the OS. The Nokia N900 with his brand-new Maemo 5, a Linux-based OS open source! Very promising. On the other hand, the Apple iPhone 3Gs with his own iPhone OS based on Mac-OS meaning a Closed Source with open source components.
On the messaging area, both present the same possibilities such as SMS, MMS, Email and Push-Email (every new e-mail is instantly and actively transferred to the phone, more info click here). This last part is the reason why I added this point, because there is not a difference as you read it but I wanted to point out that each one has his own push-email service but not as good as the Blackberry service (that´s the case on the iPhone 3Gs) as long as I have read on this subject. In the case of the Nokia N900 this would be true if it would have the Nokia Messaging Email, but it´s unknown.
The Browser. As an Internet tablet the Nokia N900 leads with the capability to use the WAP 2.0, xHTML, HTML and RSS feeds protocols (Thanks to the Flash Player 9.4 on it). While the iPhone 3Gs only has HTML protocol.
Finally, some difference on some feature that I didn’t know how to categorize are on the Nokia N900 the Stereo FM Radio, Java (MIDP 2.1), a wide variety of music and video format (audio: MP3/WMA/WAV/eAAC+ and video: WMV/RealVideo/MP4/AVI/XviD) and a Document Viewer (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF).
This is how we get to the end of this intensive comparison. Some things to clarify here, is about the OS that we don’t know too much about the Maemo 5, practical talking, because we haven’t seen it running yet, so that’s why I like to say that is promising, we have to wait to see the results. And about the Browser part, I want to add that on the Nokia N900 you can navigate to almost all the internet pages due to those attributes I have mention before.
