Dorian ebook reader for Nokia N900

25 July 2010Entry by

Some time ago you might have read my article about Panucci audiobook reader, but not everything may have come out in audio version, so now let’s focus on something else. Today I present you Dorian - simple but nice EPUB format e-book reader for Nokia N900, available in extras-testing catalogue.

With Dorian you get simple UI, the most important configuration options and few color themes. In my opinion settings are well balanced for simple application as it is now, colors for daylight and night time, custom font face, portrait mode and smooth font size scalling seem really sufficient. If you look into Dorian’s issue tracker you can see that developer is planning quite nice improvement over time, so simple for now it will be surely better some day.

Application and books relation – this is most vital part for ebook reader. Right now it supports epub format, and as far as I know it targets to this format. Books are available for example from Project Gutenberg page, mostly classics, but still lots of reading. As or me it lacks plain text support, since most of my e-books are scanned and OCRed text files with various encodings. That’s why I’d really like to see such option, maybe in time I’ll try to write it myself ;)

As for now application is in early stage, but looks promising. If to belive in developer’s plan it’s worth to wait for more updates. Nice work, keep it up.
