I think it's interesting that people claim that you can edit on any Unix box using vim.

There are several different editions of Vi, and not all of them are like vim. Sure, you'll still have a massive lead on us emacsers, but if you're going to do editing on a box, you're very likely to do so remotely, and in that case, you can use sshfs to just locally mount the filesystem anyway, and use whatever editor you prefer.

If you don't have sshfs, but are still going to log on remotely, you can just use tramp to remote edit files. The only time you _have_ to use vi would be when you're at some archaic box that doesn't allow remote logins, and doesn't have the disk-space to allow you to install your favourite editor.

If you prefer Vim then I'm not going to object to that, but to say that Vim is the only option for remote editing is just incorrect.

@Francois:
I know that, but mostly I write about applications that may be found in catalogues, it's easier for most of users to install them. And remember I'm on Vi side ;)

Hey you missed something really important.
GNU Emacs 23.1 itself is available on the N900. The real thing.
See: http://forums.internettablettalk.com/showthread.php?t=37241
I use it with my bluetooth Thinkoutside keyboard, and it rocks.
(I believe Qemacs is just a regular editor with EMACS bindings, but certainly not the real thing.)

Cheers.

Grin@Khertan ;-)

Indeed - for all mere mortals here, just use leafpad or pygtkeditor as a text editor on your N900.
