When I bought the N900 I got it to use up in our home in the mountains. We have internet with wi-fi connection but not cell phone coverage. How do I set up my phone to make phone calls using the wi-fi

Phone calls using Wi-Fi is impossible. But you can use Skype over Wi-Fi, and Skype supports calling to phone numbers (also mobile numbers), but you have to buy "credits" on Skype.
You can use an Instant Messenger, such as Pidgin, which supports a lot of services, such as Google Talk, Hotmail Messenger, etc!
