The N900 is my first Maemo device so although VNC viewer for Maemo isn't new it is to me and I'm sure it is to others.

I always thought it would be the ultimate to view and control my PC around the house as well as away from home from a handheld and I've finally got it up and running. here's a few tips if you're not familiar with it.

Install VNC server on your PC. I think there's a free version which will only run on XP but if you've got Vista/7 you'll need the enterprise edition. Now go to configure and set encryption to "prefer on"

Install the VNC viewer app on to your N900
You're now ready to go on a local area network. Open viewer on the N900 and type in the local IP address of the PC you want to connect to.
If you need to right click hold the volume up button and then touch the screen where you want to click.

If you want to use this App over the internet and you're using a Router you'll have to configure your router's firewall to open port 5900 for the IP address of your PC. Make sure you set a VNC password within the options of VNC server because other computers WILL connect. When connecting accross the internet from your n900 type the IP address of your router followed by the port.
eg 10.10.10.10:5900

If you want to access more than 1 pc at home then goto configure in vnc server and choose to except connections on 5901, then goto router's firewall settings and open port 5901 for the IP address of this PC.

BTW I haven't figured this out yet but wwhen i test the internet connection through vnc when the n900 is connected to my home wifi it doesn't work but when i'm getting my data from my mobile network it works perfectly (depending on signal). Best to reduce the colours in the viewer options down to 8bit though.

Hope this helps someone out there because it took me ages

I actually set this topic as sticky because it's quite a cool function of the N900, even though third-party

Clear, concise and sets the record straight for getting VNC to work on Vista/7 as well.

Been trying so far without success and now I know why! Thanks for the breakdown!
