There is a slight chance of trashing your N900 without the red pill too...extras-testing repository is a repository for software that is to be tested and they may not be fully functional...means bugs and so on. You're on your own if something goes wrong.  Smiley I've installed quite a few applications though and nothing seems to be wrong, if there is I haven't noticed.  Grin I wouldn't try to bypass at this point but I might try it someday. So for now I suggest you stick with the repos. As you said in another topic: there's a lot to explore...  Wink

Also you can install the .deb -files from terminal quite easily. Just install gainroot (and do a sudo gainroot) or open ssh client & server (and do a ssh localhost -l root). Then just install the file with dpkg -i file.deb

No need for pills.

If you have PR1.1.1 then App manager automatically installs .debs now. Red pill has been gone sine PR1.1 i think

This is an old topic, but i'll answer to you anyways.

a .deb file is an Installer file, such as some of the .exe you have on Windows, you know?

on the repositories and OVI store you can get applications, but there are others, which aren't on OVI neither the repositories. One of them is Chromium, for example, to install it you would need the .deb file which isn't available on the maemo repositores and ovi store.
