Keep track of your files with Storage Usage

5 June 2010Entry by

Since I have N900 I use it very intensively for multimedia. I’m uploading tons of files, watching, listening to, taking pictures, recording videos. I’m also testing lot of applications, themes, almost everything I can download and install. That’s why few times before I’ve ran into situation when I have no more space for applications or files (although I’m using additional 16GB card). Then there is no other option than to delete what I’m not using anymore and here’s the place for Storage Usage application.

At first it just looks like normal used/free space indicator, but when you tap on one of filesystem parts you can see (after few seconds of scanning) detailed view on directories, files and graphical representation of used space as rectangles. Here you can navigate through directories using arrows and yo will see your current position highlighted in right side. Alternatively if you see big rectangle or you can check where a big file that is represented by it is located by clicking left side will automatically move to appropriate directory and file.

Another nice feature is browsing packages, if you want to quickly compare installed packages, see which are the biggest and how it affects total used space you can open application menu and choose ‘Scan Packages’ option, you will see similar view, but it will represent installed packages instead of directory structure.

With this tool you can easily locate the biggest disk space eaters and start deleting unnecessary files to free maximum in short time and fewer clicks.
