MetroMap – find your way around a city

11 June 2010Entry by

Some time ago I was working in Paris. Right then my Nokia N900 was on ‘to buy list’ and I was lacking good way to keep track of metro lines while staying mobile. I’ve always memorized travel plan before going out. If I had N900 then and newly released application MetroMap it would be much easier to see all of Paris.

When I first got to the Paris center from airport I was a bit lost, only way to find hotel was asking peopleĀ  (my french is still rather bad ;) ) or using archaic map on my previous Nokia phone. Since metro is really fast way to travel around Paris I got used to it some time later.

Today when I first saw MetroMap I wanted to check if it would be easier. By default there are few cities available, but over 100 of various maps can be downloaded from website (in russian, but you can find your way following the links). Default Paris map reveals all lines in strict city center and I’ve found map of suburban trains available for download. When you have map opened you can tap select first and last station of your trip and it will find you at least oneĀ  (if there is possibility to take alternative paths it gives time and number of changes) way with detailed information on lines and train changes, so everything you need to know in order to reach your destination. There is an option to specify stations by name if you know starting and ending point and not sure where exactly it is located on map.

After seeing some applications with subway maps for one city this one seems to be solution for much more people, try it yourself!
