Nokia Map Loader for the N900
Since I read somewhere in the Maemo community, that Nokia Map Loader is now available for our beloved N900, I tried and tried to find the way to install it and use it. It’s not easy to find the download for the Map Loader on the Nokia site, sorry, for me it wasn’t. Finally I found it here, thanks to the german blogsite www.pocket.at, but you can find it also on the national Nokia site, if you willing enough to.
You will find also two versions, one for the PC and one for the Mac. I downloaded first the Windows version to give it a try on my XP machine (I thought to take the secure way, on installing it to the PC). First you have to know, that you need to install the PC suite, unless you didn’t have it already. Then install the Map Loader, and restart your computer. Don’t ask why, the instructions told me so, it won’t work without a restart. Full of expectation I started the program. It told me that I am connected to minimum one phone N900 (PC suite mode) and that it couldn’t find the map location and that I have to connect again in Mass Storage Mode. After this procedure it just starts to wait for my phone, although it is connected (online in the PC suite). Nothing happend. Very confused.

After this defeat, I took my macbook and downloaded Map Loader again, this time for the Mac
, started it and nothing. Also here you have to install first the Nokia Multimedia Transfer program for the mac to success to run the Map Loader. And what a pleasant surprise: it worked! I downloaded maps to my N900! Now I have to test it on the road, and for I am on a road trip right now, this is the opportunity. But this is another story.

It doesn’t work on my N900. It says I have an old version of maps. I have OVI MAPS 1.01.
Thanks
Milko
Map Loader have been available for months. At least I installed it through PC suite in the beginning of December 2009.
Put this on the Xterminal “cp /home/user/MyDocs/.qf /home/user/MyDocs/qf” and later connect the phone and enter the maploader. It should work that way
Thank you for the link.
I installed the Windows version of Map Loader.
The instructions indicated I needed to connect my N900 in Mass Storage Mode. It immediately found the N900. I picked my maps and voice pack and they are downloading as I write this.
I will be surprised if the voice pack has any use as to date I’ve not noted anything like turn by turn voice navigation on the N900. I’m an optimist, maybe this will be useful in the near future.
I think this would help you for the XP machine:

Where you to actually read the manual, it’s very clear about what you need to do to use the PC map loader and where to download it. You must run OVI maps on the N900 (to create the map folder) and then connect the N900 in media share mode before running the map loader. I did this and it worked like a charm the very first time for me. If it’s showing you’re connected in PC Suite mode when you’re trying to run the mapper, you’re not in the right mode.
I like the map loader, especially since it lets you choose which countries / regions you want to install. I was quite disappointed that it let me install the voice files, but then didn’t actually use them at all, but maybe in the next release?
Overall the OVI maps version on the phone is low quality at best. The maps and GPS location are great, but the lack of local routing, turn by turn, voice commands, and even simple things like being able to store pin-points to route to later sucks. I was also disappointed that while addresses can be put in contact info, you can’t just hit it to start the maps app and route to that address (something that seems quite intuitive, and simple to pull off, since it can lookup/route based on an address…)
Hi,
Is this the OVI maps 1 version or whatever that is or is this is the 3.0 version. I already have the 1.0 version. Why is it saying that downloading voice data when its completely useless. any answers would be greatly appreciated.
Map Loader doesn’t work with Windows 7.
Hey guys. I have my N900 connected to the Maps Loader and it is telling me there is an updated version 3.0 for my phone but it fails. any solutions?
Hi, nice Info that the maploader is available for PC and Mac.
But the funny thing is, that the Nokia N900 has a Linux Operating System, and the main Apps, like PcSuite and now the MapLoader, aren`t available under Linux Operating Systems. Sounds like a joke to me.

Greetings to all…
I’ve been feeling a lot SPECIAL since two days before, when I finally got maps loaded on my N900…
I’m running Win7 and none of the instructions I’ve seen around on the net reaaaally helped….
First of all, I got the job done by setting the compatibility mode for running the map loader to “Vista SP3″, which noone has mentioned before… or should I say “many have objected doing so”…?
Second, I set the phone to PC SUITE MODE!!!! ?!
Third… I saw a nice guide lying around about the “qf” file…
after some experimenting, either hidden or not, the map loader succesfully loaded / read maps on my device…
I’m reaaaaally dissapointed by Nokia & its Ovi store for not posting maps/guides to do this….
check this link , it works :

I wrote the fix that Farzad mentions above. As PR 1.2 was released for the N900 today, the 26th, I identified a follow-up fix as the previous fix will stop working after you upgrade to the new firmware. The fix can be found at http://wp.me/pOhA7-fn
