It’s not news that the Nokia N900 gives you the possibility of communicate avoiding using your carrier network due to the WiFi feature and the Skype and Gtalk and other IM apps on the phone. But using the first two through 3G network, it´s something I have to point out.

The N900 has among its integrated systems the Skype, meaning that the Nokia N900 hasn’t a Skype application installed. Even more, Skype is integrated into Maemo as method calls and contacts. This situation repeats for Google Talk, but what is more interesting is the possibility to make audio calls to contacts in Skype and Google Talk.

On a Spanish Blog called GizmóvilI, the writer tried this communication services under N900 WiFi network and Vodafone’s 3G network in Spain, with incredible results which he did not expect, making calls to your contacts using the network operator. We all know that the operators block VoIP protocols to avoid saturation of the nodes and this way, you make phone calls to pay their rates. Not with this terminal.

For the tests he’s done under WiFi and Vodafone’s 3.5G network he could make and receive Skype and Google Talk calls without problems, with a fairly decent quality audio but with some delay in the sound, less than a second.

As this writer says we are not sure how Maemo manages these calls, VoIP is assumed to be stopped by operator, but may not be so. Maybe the Nokia N900 uses another form of transmitting call’s data. What is certain is this: you can call Google Talk contacts and Skype using your flat rate data.
