Super Tux – The Review

4 February 2010Entry by

Super Tux is a Super Mario clone for the N900 in which the player controls “Tux”, the penguin from the Linux logo, through a variety of snow filled levels, collecting coins and a variety of player upgrades.

As in the original Mario, Tux starts the game as a small penguin, with no defences, who can only be hit once by an enemy before he is killed. Tux becomes less vulnerable by picking up power ups hidden in certain question marked blocks dotted around the levels. The first pick up, I assume is a snowball, and is similar to the mushroom on Mario, as it instantly begins moving when released from its box. On picking up the snowball, Tux becomes “Super Tux”, a much taller penguin, who can now withstand two enemy attacks before death. If the player stays as Super Tux however, and collect the next pick up, which as in Mario is an orange flower, Super Tux becomes a shade of orange and can now shoot fireballs, which can damage the enemy from a distance. Fire Tux can withstand Three attacks before death.

The enemy’s are similar to Mario, the standard Goomba enemies of Mario, are replaced with walking snowballs, the Koopa Troopers, with walking blocks of ice etc., so its not to difficult to figure out how to defeat each enemy as they come.

The graphics of the game are exactly what they should be, colourful and smooth, taking the original mode 7 approach of the SNES versions of Mario. The game itself is high resolution and looks excellent on the N900 large display.

The controls are easy to use, once you get used to them, and similar in a way to using a PSP Go in reverse. The controls are all customisable however, so the player can change them to their personal preference.

Super Tux is expandable, by means of the level editor in which a player can create entirely new levels for the game.

Super Tux overall, is enjoyable and will easily waste a few hours, without getting boring.
Value for money is excellent, as the game is free to download from the App Manager, and also at the link below along with many other great N900 Titles.
