Three days after the official release of the Nokia N900 it’s probably a good day to start talking about applications for this device. Why? Because I’m sure that there is already a bunch of people who is enjoying happily and peacefully his brand new Nokia N900. So I decided to give them a hand with their phones.
Maemo Extras
First you should know what is “Maemo Extras” and “Extras Testing”. These are repositories or places where applications from the community can be found. That´s more than enough. So there is two ways of downloading apps from maemo.org.
The simple one is to go to downloads.maemo.org from your N900’s web browser and by clicking in the green arrows right next to the apps (on the right side of the screen If you are looking into it).
The Extras Repository
But then there is what it’s call Extras repository, where the Nokia N900 will received update notifications for the apps. This Extra repository is already pre-configured on your Nokia N900 but it’s disable by default. So to enable it, please follow this steps:
Go into the Application manager.
Tap the menu -> Application catalogs…
Tap Maemo Extras.
Uncheck Disabled.
Manual Installation
If it isn’t there on your phone, you can do it manually with the following easy steps:
Application manager –> Application catalogs –> New
Catalog name: Maemo Extras
Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras/
Distribution: fremantle
Components: free non-free
After enabling it, browse through the download section of the Application Manager.
Tomorrow I will post about the applications available on maemo.org.

Every time we read about the Nokia N900 being compared with a desktop computer, there are contrary feelings. Some of us may feel excited and some may react in a more defensive way and have misgivings about this (It´s all right to think that way, diversity it´s always good in my opinion).
For both kinds of people here is some exciting news. Have you ever imagine downloading a torrent from your mobile “phone”? Now with the Nokia N900 is possible. Using a P2P Client app, called Transmission (for more info please click here) you can go to any torrent page and download whatever you want (the last episode of your favorite TV-Show, a movie, etc.). However, you have to be careful with a few things.
First, the Transmission app is still a beta version so it could have some bugs but once the final version comes out you can forget about this. Secondly, you are only able to download a complete one file video, because the Nokia N900 doesn´t have any file integrator utility yet. Finally, it´s when downloading the torrent there is a lack of multitasking. I couldn´t get more info about this issue. I don´t know if it happens because the downloading process requires too much processing power or if it´s due to some software development problem.
On the video, the downloading file size is around the 380 mb and on 40 minutes the download is finished. Considering that the phone is using a Wi-Fi connection, it´s a good performance in my opinion. Once finished the download, you can watch the video and enjoy it.
So, which would be the conclusion? Basically it´s an important improvement that shows the power of the Nokia N900 and as I said at the beginning, it´s just justifying a little bit more the comparison against a desktop computer. However, the multitasking issue has to be taken into account, because the phone becomes useless while during the download process. So, is it really a good idea to download torrent files from the phone? Considering also that the best way of doing it is through a Wi-Fi network …
