Tell me who’s calling – eSpeakCaller

31 March 2010Entry by

Many people before me mentioned the fact that N900 doesn’t have the ability to assign ringtone to contact. I miss that too, sometimes I’d like to know who’s calling before I take phone out of my pocket. Still I have no solution for that, I was even thinking of writing this myself, but I’ve found some kind of workaround which helps with that issue in other way.

eSpeakCaller is the solution for this issue and for me it sounds (literally) perfectly. As a fan of retro computers (if you read about my theme and wallpaper you should know what is it about), vacuum tubes and monochromatic displays I really like raw voice of eSpeak synthesizer, it reminds me of C64 and BlackBox v8.

Memories, good old times, but what is it for exactly? Some earlier Nokia phones have option to tell you who’s calling using speach synthesizer, this one is similar. First version I’ve tried few days ago allowed to change language and notifications for unknown callers. After updating today I’ve found more options like using nickname instead of caller ID, more settings for voice, additional options for unknown or private numbers and additional parameters that I haven’t time to try. Configuration UI is rather simple and intuitive, so you shouldn’t have any problem with that, ‘Test’ button allows you to check what to expect of this software in practice. One last thing I might expect is support for polish (and proably other language specific) characters, it just doesn’t save properly. For now I need to make spelling mistake to have private numbers said properly (polish ‘zastrze?ony’, need to type ‘zastrzerzony’).

So for now the only thing I need to think about is giving nicknames in my contacts not to affront anyone and sometimes keep full name in secret. I hope noone will be offended hearing ‘my beloved Kitty is calling’ ;) .
